Kenneth Brown, Religion and Philosophy: Protests

On 13 May 1969, a mass marriage ceremony and tent-in took place on the Manchester College campus.  The purpose was to initiate a "change in attitude...tak[ing] the form of students assuming freedom and responsibility in determining the direction of their lives."

History, Political Science and Social Science materials including but not limited to: bibliographies, descriptions and/or reports for the Social Sciences Core, the Humanities Core Program, Senior Colloquium (1968), January Interim Term, and the Natural Sciences Core Program (1967). Humorous plaque illustrating "The Golden Age" of Waas, Bishop, Buzzard, Caldwell, Bittinger, Calihan and Johansen.

Author, Theodore Dreiser, visited North Manchester during the summer of 1915.  His observations of the community were included in his autobiography, "A Hoosier Holiday."  John Knarr writes about Dreiser's family and includes material on the Snap/Snepp/Sheneb/Shenep/Schneb/Schnebb family as well as on the Fruit family.

A second article, "A Trip to Niagara Falls, 1925," was discovered among papers donated to the North Manchester Center for History by Descendants of Ellis and Harold Miller.

C.P.S. Unit 101 Registrar's Records along with a brief history and reference material describing the creation of CPS Camp 101 and its sub-camps, of which Manchester College was one. Manchester College's 10-week program was directed locally by Dr. Andrew W. Cordier.  The sixty-seventy CPS'ers were chosen by Brethren Service Committee, and the plan was for them to leave the country and begin relief and rehabilitation work immediately after the program's completion.

Decades of correspondence between Vernon Schwalm and Andrew Cordier. Cordier gives detailed accounts of behind-the-scenes activity at the United Nations during the Cold War, and the reader can watch the situation in the Congo unfold.  Cordier's role in the Cuban missile Crisis is described to Schwalm as are events on the Columbia University campus during a period of student uprising in the the 1960's. Cordier is always in the thick of things and his descriptions of political figures and events are intriguing.

In March 1998, a group made up of North Manchester community members began meeting with the purpose of "working together to make this a better community, a healthy community, a hospitable community." - from a brochure entitled, "Manchester Together"

United Sexualities:  A group focusing on providing support to members of the GLBT community working to educate and promote dialogue amidst the Manchester community concerning issues of sexual minorities (for example, provides "safe zone" training).

Friends for Sexual Awareness:  A student-initiated group working to educate people about the different risks involved in unhealthy sexual lifestyles and the options surrounding safe sex.  It provides confidential information and support to people who are struggling with sex-related concerns.
